Reddit and TikTok Face UK Investigation Over Child Data Privacy Concerns

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an official investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur over concerns about how they handle children's personal data. The probe aims to determine whether these platforms comply with UK privacy laws designed to safeguard underage users.

Are Social Media Algorithms Putting Children at Risk?

AI-driven algorithms power social media platforms, curating personalized content to maximize user engagement. However, these same algorithms can inadvertently expose minors to inappropriate or harmful material, raising serious child safety concerns. The ICO’s investigation will assess whether these companies have adequate safeguards in place to protect young users.

What the Investigation Covers

  • TikTok (ByteDance): Examining how TikTok collects and processes personal data from users aged 13–17 and whether it influences the content they see.
  • Reddit & Imgur: Evaluating their age-verification systems and determining if minors can still access content that may be inappropriate for them.

“If we find sufficient evidence that any of these companies have violated UK data protection laws, we will take necessary action,” the ICO stated.

Previous Actions & Company Responses

In 2023, the ICO fined TikTok £12.7 million ($16 million) for collecting personal data from children under 13 without parental consent.

  • Reddit has stated that it is fully cooperating with the investigation and plans to update its age-assurance measures to align with UK regulations.
  • TikTok, ByteDance, and Imgur have yet to respond to the ongoing probe.

With increasing scrutiny on child data protection, this investigation signals potential stricter regulations and stronger enforcement against social media platforms in the near future.
