10 Free Ways I Used to Make My Laptop Faster at Home

A slow laptop is the most frustrating thing ever, especially when you're trying to get work done. I’ve been there! Luckily, after trying a bunch of things, I found 10 super effective ways to speed up my laptop without spending a rupee. If your laptop is lagging, give these a shot:

1. Restart Your Laptop

Sounds simple, right? But trust me, restarting actually helps. I used to leave my laptop on for days, and it just got slower and slower. A quick restart clears out unnecessary background processes and speeds things up.

2. Close Unused Programs and Background Apps

I used to have 10+ apps running in the background without realizing it! Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and shut down anything that’s eating up memory but isn’t needed.

3. Disable Startup Programs

I noticed my laptop took forever to start up because of all the unnecessary programs launching automatically. I went to Task Manager > Startup tab and disabled everything I didn’t need at boot-up.

4. Clear Temporary Files and Cache

I was shocked to find gigabytes of junk files slowing down my laptop! Just press Win + R, type %temp%, and delete everything there. Also, run Disk Cleanup for a deeper clean.

5. Uninstall Unnecessary Software

I used to download all sorts of programs and then never use them. When I finally uninstalled the ones I didn’t need (Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program), my laptop felt much snappier.

6. Free Up Storage Space

If your hard drive is almost full, your laptop slows down—big time. I moved large files to an external drive and deleted old downloads. That instantly made a difference!

7. Adjust Power Settings for Performance

By default, my laptop was set to Balanced Mode, which limits performance to save battery. Switching to High-Performance Mode in Control Panel > Power Options made everything run smoother.

8. Keep Your OS and Drivers Updated

Updating Windows and drivers always seemed like a hassle, but once I started doing it regularly, I noticed fewer crashes and faster performance.

9. Run a Virus and Malware Scan

My laptop was once crawling because of hidden malware! A quick scan with Windows Defender helped remove unwanted software and speed things up.

10. Defragment Your Hard Drive (HDD Users Only)

If you’re using an HDD (not an SSD), defragmenting your disk helps a lot. I ran Defragment and Optimize Drives and saw noticeable improvements.

Final Thoughts

These tips seriously transformed my slow laptop into a smooth machine. If your laptop is still sluggish after trying all this, consider upgrading your RAM or switching to an SSD—that’s my next plan!
